Its origins trace back to the early 19th century when it was unofficially known as "Stumptown" due to the numerous tree stumps left from clearing land for cotton farms. The arrival of the Carolina Central Railway in 1874 spurred growth, leading to its incorporation as Matthews in 1879, named in honor of Edward Matthews, a railroad director.
Over the years, Matthews has flourished, balancing modern development with its historical roots. The town boasts a variety of attractions, including the Matthews Heritage Museum, the historic Train Depot and Visitor’s Center, and the renowned Renfrow Hardware store, which has been serving the community for over a century.
